SAE 1020 is a low-carbon steel characterized by a chemical composition of roughly 0.18–0.23% carbon, 0.30–0.60% manganese, along with trace amounts of phosphorus (≤0.040%) and sulfur (≤0.050%). It boasts good ductility and weldability, with a tensile strength ranging from 410 to 510 MPa and a yield strength of about 245 MPa. This material offers excellent machinability in its cold-drawn or normalized state and has a Brinell hardness of approximately 111 HB.
